The Underdog Rulebook:
1 - General Overview:
Referees in the Underdog League follow strict rules and guidelines based on the 2023 Official FIBA Basketball Rulebook.
*Access to the rulebook can be found attached at the bottom of this page*
2 - "Underdog Adjustments":
a) Game Time Format: Runtime will be used for the entire game, except during specific periods outlined as follows: The last minute of the second quarter and the last two minutes of the fourth quarter will be played under stop time. Games are only eligible for stop time if the score is within 10 points.
b) Stop Time Rules: Stop time rules will only be applied to games where the score difference is within 10 points. If the point difference exceeds 10 points during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, the game will revert to run time.
c) Shot Clock Implementation: A 24-second manual or mechanical shot clock will be introduced for the last four minutes of the fourth quarter to ensure games remain competitive and fair. This includes a 14-second reset pending offensive rebounds.
d) Overtime Periods: Standard overtimes will be 2 minutes with stop time. Overtime periods will follow FIBA rules, with adjustments to stop time rules if applicable based on the game situation.
e) Game Interruptions: In case of game interruptions (e.g., injuries, technical issues), referees have full discretion to stop the clock. The game clock will resume based on FIBA rules once the issue is resolved.
f) Substitutes and Fill-Ins: Some players will be permitted to play pending a request made to League Officials during the regular season. Substitute players are not permitted to play in the playoffs, only fully registered players.
g) Late Start Penalty: A technical free throw will be awarded to the opposing team for each minute the late team arrives after the scheduled game start time, beginning 10 minutes past the designated start time. If a team has not arrived by halftime, the team arriving late will concede a forfeit and lose the game.
3 - Code of Conduct:
The Underdog League is committed to fostering a positive and respectful environment for all participants. We expect all players, officials, and spectators to conduct themselves with the utmost respect and courtesy. While we acknowledge the competitive nature of the environment, we won't tolerate any form of abuse. This means refraining from any form of verbal or physical abuse, as well as steering clear of taunting or unsportsmanlike behavior. Our goal is to maintain a healthy and enjoyable experience for everyone involved by promoting good sportsmanship. Fair play is paramount in our league, and we encourage participants to adhere to the rules of the game, accept decisions made by officials, and maintain a spirit of friendly competition. Inclusivity is a core value, and we welcome players from all backgrounds. Discriminatory language or actions based on race, gender, or any other factor will not be tolerated. The safety of our participants is a priority, and we ask everyone to follow safety guidelines and promptly report any unsafe conditions to league officials. Additionally, we expect participants to take care of league-provided equipment and facilities, reporting any damage or issues to ensure a smooth experience for all. Participants are required to comply with the league's policies, rules, and regulations and cooperate with officials to uphold the integrity of the league. Our commitment to a drug-free and alcohol-free environment is non-negotiable, and participants are expected to refrain from any league activities under the influence. Displaying respect and camaraderie, regardless of the outcome, is fundamental to our league. A handshake with opponents after games and acknowledgment of their efforts is a simple yet powerful way to promote the values of fair play and positive competition. Together, let's create an enjoyable and inclusive basketball experience for everyone involved in the Underdog League.
